Problem with internet log on.

My friend has two pc's hooked up to a simple splitter to enable a shared internet connection (only one pc at a time can use the net). One is a Gateway and the other is a Micron. Strangely, the Gateway will not allow him to logon to the internet at night, while the Micron will -- both however work during the day. At night the Gateway states - NO DIAL TONE. Frustrated, he shuts it off and logs on perfectly with the Micron. They both work again perfectly in the morning. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

Probably the splitter. Check at night at the Gateway end of the line and see if there really is no dialtone. Do that by connecting it to a phone and listening. If there really is a dialtone . . . that is a wierd problem.

The other thing you can try is bypass the splitter and run the line directly to the Gateway at night.
