I tried some modem tweaker programs and such, and now whenever i play a game or something my internet jus dies, it doesn't kick me off but it won't send out any data or receive any. If i don't play any games it stays on fine. Is there anything i can do to jus get my settings back to normal default?

Format and reinstall comes to mind. Sometimes, if you've made too many changes or tried a lot of utilities and they have all left some sort of garbage in your system files, it is easier to just bite the bullet and wipe everything.

What do those modem tweaking programs actually do anyways? I always thought they were a crock of sh!t. Of course I feel that way about anything that gets spammed to me.

The only way I could see it speeding up the connection is to use a different protocol with a different compression, in which case your ISP or the modem on the other end would have to support it as well.

Unistall and reinstall your network protocols. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling your modem (just in Windows, not the actual hardware).

HappyPuppy's advice is definitely the fail-safe solution. However, I've had good sucess with issues similar to your's by doing the following. download a free trial copy of system mechanic, then remove your modem, it's software and any tweak utilies, ect. that you tried. once you've removed everything use System Mechanic to find and clean out the now useless reg. entries, files and invalid uninstaller info, ect. When your done using System Mechanic you should be able to shutdown, reinstall the modem and have a clean slate with it, so to speak. There are many other utilities which can accomplish the same task so if you have SystemWorks or something similar, you can do the same thing.

ok, i did that and reinstalled my modem and network stuff but it still does it. The only other thing i can think of that might have caused it is i jus installed a logitech ifeel mouse and the software for that.

I should have asked before but did you remember to back up your registry before tweaking things? If so just restore the original as it sounds like there are still some bad settings there. If you didn't then I got nothin' 🙁

This sucks, i did everything, then i was going to jus reformat, so i popped in the compaq recovery disk and when it started up it said my machine couldn't do it. I jus got it out of the shop like 2 weeks ago, and they had to reinstall all my hardware. I called tech support and they said my software warrenty was out and there wasn't anything they could do unless they could charge me 39 bucks. I did a system restore to a earlier date and it still does it. Could it possible not be my computer but msn?

I think most of those "tweakers" are setting your Maximum MTU value to 576 vs. Windows standard 1500, and setting the corresponding "RWIN" values.

As for the recovery disk, is your hardware the same as when the pc was first purchased? Can you return it to that condition temporarily?
At what point is the Recovery Disk complaining about not being able to do it's thing?

What OS?

And yes it could be MSN.
I have had the same problem 3 times for about 24hrs at a time since 1/16/02.

Their Tech support will tell you it is your problem.

When it happened to me it was happening on 2 different computers (1-WIN 95 and 1- WIN ME) at 2 different locations and 2 different accounts. This is only when their password and user name servers are up and you can get in at all.

Searching for another ISP for myself and 2 family members and 1 neighbor now.
I am the first person they call when they have problems and I'm tired of talking to the MSN people.

If you are using WIN 95 it could be an app called "Rnaapp.exe".
Do a search at google and you will find how to correct it.

I am using Windows ME, and i have that file on my computer too. MSN told me to d/l the new IE cause it could be corrupted (yea..right.)

Stiler, I know you're concentrating on the MSN possibility, but as to the Recovery CD, can you be more specific? Whenever you can post EXACT error messages, it's much easier to troubleshoot vs. something like "it said it couldn't do it". Word for word, letter for letter. Chances are others have had this issue and someone's found a fix. But it's much easier to find if you give exact details. So, that said, what exactly does the screen print out when you try to run the recovery CD?

It says: "Your machine can not run this operation, Turn off your computer." i jus got it back from the compaq service center and they had to put in a new motherboard, hard drive, dvd drive and processor, thats why i think it isn't working.

I've done the same thing from playing with stupid tweakers and such, but there is a cure.
Go to this website and download the sguide_default_9x.zip file and run it. That will set all your registry
settings back to there original windows defaults. It works too. And if that doesn't work then you've got
serious probs.
Good Luck! 🙂
