Problem with installation of Canon Scanner driver on WinXP Pro

Just bought a new Canoscan D1250U2. The computer detects the hardware correctly everytime, but whenever I tried installing the driver, it says 'class installer denies installation or upgrade of device' after all files are copied. I opened device manager & the scanner is there, but it's disabled and it says in the box that the driver will be uninstalled when I next start up the computer.
So the driver is copied, but for some reason it uninstalled itself after copying it. It's the same whether I load all programs at startup or in 'selective loading' mode. I also tried installing with the digital signature detection ignored, but no joy.
What's wrong?

How is the scanner connected? If it is USB, standard procedure for installing new devices with XP is to install the software FIRST before the hardware. Then after a reboot, you hot plug the device and it should all be there.
