Problem with @home connection

Okay here is the situation:

I got Roger@home connection with Lancity Modem. I got Win 98se installed and i got a home network going. I share internet connection with one other computer and my internet sharing software is sygate. (4.0 Build 712).

Now internet works great but for some reason i cant log in to programs like napster, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or ICQ. Now my Counter Strike works fine and i can log into websites with member ships (ie anandtech forums) just the programs that i mentioned.

Can any tell me why that would be happening?

been a while since I used Sygate and Wingate so I can't help you much on that but have you tried using ICS built into Win98se? I have a friend set up using ICS and it works great without a problem.

I think the first places I'd look would be static routes or firewall software. If you do a "Netstat -rn" from a DOS box, it'll show you the current route table and sessions. Compare whatever routes you have (if any other than default/0.0.0.0) with the addresses from "nslookup <site name here>."

If you've done anything with DNS lately, or your DHCP settings, that would be a good place to look too.

If you're running firewall software, try disabling it temporarily to see if you can get through. Don't forget that you may have to kill the service as well as exiting the front-end.

Good Luck

****WARNING**** I am total ignorant of networking so pardon my gaffes ****WARNING****

okay here is the problem.

i did the first step and ran netstat -rn in dos. it game me a long list and i can see all of it as its scroll to the end and i cant see the top. resizing the window just changes the font of dos and doesnt increase the lines of data visible.

How ever i can see the last block of data (starts with heading 'Active Connections') and it has data in 4 columns titled Proto, Local Addresses, Foreign Addresses and State. These heading are followed by 10 sets of data. Proto = TCP in all 10. Local Addresses = 24.114.54.44:4xxx where xxx are other numbers. Foreign Address = 24.112.158.14x:8080. And State = TIME_WAIT for first 9 and CLOSE_WAIT for last one.

And where do i use nslookup command?

thanx

DHCP and all that stuff is as required by @home. another interesting thing, i CAN log in to those programs as soon as i start my PC but then they stop working after 10-15 min. also napster has no problems being used in my client computer (shutting program on Client does not help my servers problems).

OK, to see the whole table from "netstat -rn" make it "netstat -rn | more" (the vertical line (called "pipe&quot😉 on my keyboard is above the "\" (backslash).

nslookup is also done from a DOS box and should be only a couple lines long.

Pardon my asking, but this is a required question: Did you change anything, or add any software or hardware any time recently (before it started screwing up)?

Have you done any "Windows Updates" recently (start button, windows updates)?

Just curious.

Good LUck

Great that | more works like a charm. now another question: 😱

the nslookup <website name here> what website? if i am trying to connect to napster do i use napster.com? or what for MSN Messenger? also once i get it going what do i look for in comparing with the earlier command?

As for making any changes, well this hasnt been working for nearly a year but i didnt care but now i just want it to get fixed. I think it use to work fine before i networked my home computers and started internet sharing.

tahnx for all the help
