Problem with flashing Toshiba bios - Tecra 8000

The machine has been sitting in a closet and had win 98. I added a pcmcia wireless and got the memory up to 192meg but it still has no sound. I think it needs an update to >9.0 bios for Win2K support. But the toshiba instructions seem to indicate I should have done the flash before trying the 2k install. They dont allow me to get to bios screen at all (pf12 was supposed to do a manual bios update but nada)..
