Problem with FastAccess DSL and router.

Hello, I have an Xbox and the Xbox LIVE service. I had cable until we decided to get DSL Extreme, about 5 months ago. At the time, I had a Linksys router for my Xbox and one PC. Everything worked fine. Since I've had my DSL, I havn't attempted to play XBox live, just because the fact I havn't had time, etc. Well, the other day I bought Halo 2 and wanted to play via LIVE. So I go and hook up the router to my modem and to my PC and Xbox. I turn back on the computer and I can't get a connection. The FastAccess test connection utility said that it was a DNS problem. Then I tried to plug the DSL modem directly into the Xbox. The Xbox says that it is a DNS error also. What is a DNS error and how do I fix it? Please help, for I am desperate. Thanks.

Is the XBOX getting the network settings via DHCP from your router? If you had them set statically before, you may have to make some changes to the settings.

In the settings area on the XBox is a way to either manually enter an IP address and such. You don't want that. You want to set it to automatic. I'm not in front of mine right now but boot with no CD, go to the network settings and it's one of the first screens.

Ok here is the problem. The Westell IS a router. So you just added another router to the mix. That is causing the problem. You either need to setup the westell as an ethernet bridge and hook your router up.

OR

You can hookup a switch(instead of a router) to the westell.

Alright, all is well, now. I just wanted t be able to play online with the xbox, so I hooked up the modem directly to the xbox. Then I entered the network settings manually. Then I tried to connect. Viola it worked! I dn what I wasn't doing before but anyways, its working. So then I hook up my router and just used it as a switch. It works! Yay now I can go play Halo 2 online finally.

Sorry for bad grammar, im in a hurry.
