Has anyone problem with ECS K7s5a with Windows 2000 SP2?

I am having problem with Windows 2000 Pro when I fresh installed and install all latest motherboard drivers also did windows update everything...it was stable for 3 days then crushed when the Windows boot up and stopped saying that the windows/system/system32/systemcmd or something like that was missing or corrupted I tried with emergency disk to repair...no go...so I had to reformat the hard drive and re-install over again..it was stable for a week then crashed again...it has happened 5 times for last 3 or 4 weeks. I can't figure what is causing it? I don't know if Windows 2000 is stable or not.

My system is:
ECS k7s5a
256 PC133
40GB Seagate HD ATA100
Intel HAM modem
Que 24x40x10
ATI Radeon
Sony Floppy drive
NEC 17 MultiSync monitor

Should I go back to Windows 98SE?:disgust:

I had that happened to me on a KT266 board. Installed W2kp with all "LATEST" drivers I downloaded and experienced samething as you had. Reinstalled with the drivers on the Cd-rom that came with the mobo solved the problem.

You should try that route if you have to reinstall again.

does that mean I can't use latest version of drivers that are not from mobo CD???

Latest does not mean greatest...

You should start from what the mfg. recommands and test for stability, then move on with newer driver one at a time. If anything goes wrong after the update you know what is causing the problem.

<< windows/system/system32/systemcmd >>

Had this happen on my Dad's rig(ASUS A7V133/1GHz Athlon) last weekend after I used the "startcpl" app to turn off Ahead's InCD on startup, couldn't boot into safe mode, last known good configuration or use recovery, only thing that worked was a format/clean install of win2kpro. Needless to say I will never use InCD again. BTW I'm running an ECS K7S5A with win2kpro/sp2 with no problems.

If it crashes again and it probably will.
On next install go to micrsoft via windows update
search for microsoft installer 2.0
I had read about the installer along time ago and after an experience similar to yours I reloaded the OS got installer 2.0
then Installed SP2 and everything else
I forget the details of the differences in the installers but that seems to have been the ticket for me.
Cannot figure out why they would not "publicize" this problem but then they are MS.

I'm K7S5A user, and I also had the same problem using Win2K Advance server after updated from microsoft as you have. I just gave up and now go back to WinME..:p.

My suggestion I guess is not to update it for a while until it's clear whether you really need the update or not.

I'm running win2k sp2 on three ECS K7S5A systems with no problems like you describe & have been running them since about September, 2000. All three systems differ from yours, but only major difference seems to be the HAM modem (no idea what that is).

I'm not quite sure what to advise you, but I doubt the problem has anything to do with the mb. Like others advised, run with the "default" drivers first, update later as need be. I too have learned to restrain myself from "upgrading" drivers for a system that is running fine.

yes I guess I have to use old drivers from the mobo cd so I can't use AGP 1.09 which is the lastest one I can't use instead with 1.03 I don't reember what is the difference between two.

Are you using Ahead's Nero and InCD programs with your burner? Just before your last powerdown did you use startcpl to stop InCD from running in the background on startup?

Welcome to my hell. MS has a long history of building unstable Operating Systems. 2000 being the least friendly to gamers. I went through 6 installs before blowing it out completely and stuck with 98SE until XZP Professional waseleased

Rotti,

My Win2k pro works just fine. I downloaded ECS drivers and installed on ECS-K7S5A mobo.

many people told me not to buy XP because it is not worth it and stick with win2k cuz it is the most stable than others.

So far my computer is running fine now but I did not turn off my computer because I am little nervous about screw up again so I leave it on all the time since last installatin.

I saw messages on other website saying that AGP 1.09 has problem with trashing ZIP and possibly on hard drive so it might be the one I am having problem with. They told to install AGP driver not IDE driver....So I am not sure how it works under windows 2000.
