On my P4 1.6GHz computer with Windows XP Pro.
I have 2 removable drives. DVD-RW and DVD-ROM
Both Brand name LG and Samsung. Anyways I have the DVD-RW jumper set to master and the DVD-ROM set to slave. Which is right, however I want to know for sure. I read and got some info from an expert that said the DVD-RW should be on master and the DVD-ROM on either the slave or CS. What should the DVD-ROM be on? SL (slave) or CS (Cable Select)??? Because most my movies on DVD-ROM slave jumper play slow or freeze compared to the DVD-RW plays fine. And I know it is not the DVD-ROM drive because my uncle has the same exact problem his DVD-ROM drive jumper is set to Slave too. So what I did was changed the DVD-ROM drive to CS instead of slave and now when I start my computer only the DVD-RW drive is listed. Where did the DVD-ROM drive go?

Please if you know how to solve this problem please email me.

Question:
Why even have the DVD-rom installed when the DVD-RW drive can play DVDs?

Anyways.....

If the RW is set as a master then yes the rom drive would be set as a slave. If you use cable select, both drives have to use it and you must change the IDE cable connectors around meaning the ide cable would be like this.....

MB connector..........master drive........slave drive

Cable select
MB connector..........slave drive......master drive

All cable select does really is have the motherboard figure out which drive is a master or slave going by the connectors

The fact that your so-called "expert" recommended that you set one drive to master and the other to cable select just shows that he's an idiot.

If you're going to use the cable select setting (which I see no reason for and which your current IDE may not even support depending on what kind it is), both drives on the IDE chain need to be set to CS. That's the reason why only your DVD-RW is showing and not the DVD-ROM.

Having the DVD-ROM as the slave device shouldn't cause the movies to play show (assuming you're not using the DVD-RW at the same time). I have my DVD-ROM as a slave drive and everything plays fine.

Give more info. What are the rest of the system specs?

thanks everyone!

I will put it back to slave, but why is it choppy and sometimes freeze? I want to fix my DVD-ROM because I want to burn from DVD to DVD-RW. And it is faster then burning to hard drive.

mjatas, search this forum for info about "DMA"; I have a feeling your choppyness problem is related to a DMA issue.

Right click My Computer. Click Manage. Click Device Manager. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. For whatever channel (primary or secondary) your optical drives are on , the DMA setting should either be AUTO or Ultra DMA 2.
