Problem with DirectX

I'm having a problem running some games like Farcry and HL2 demos, so I ran dxdiag and under the "system" tab I noticed it had my directx version listed as directX9b. I've downloaded the directx9c version and installed it already so I'm confused now. I'd appreciate any answers or suggestions.
 
I've tried to reinstall it several times but when I get past the copyright agreement and click next to install it instantly goes to the "finished" screen and says it is done.
 
Wait, it wasn't supposed to do that? Maybe this is the problem with my games. I got DX from Microsoft and the SCCT DVD, and both installed like this.
