Problem with CS

I'm having a problem with Half-Life, CS, and all the other HL mods. Whenever I join a game and hit escape (like to go to the menu), when I try to return to game it locks up. I have newest directx, and I originally had this problem with my gf4 mx440, but I'm still having it with my new gf4 ti4600. I've tried it with stock dets, beta dets, and omega tweaked drivers. This is a huge annoyance, as I have to restart the program to join another game.

Forgot to add, this only happens in Direct3d mode, not software or opengl.

Does this problem with CS involve the use of Steam or not? Right now, there's so many problems with Steam configurations that you may as well get in line with everyone else.

 
Download Steam full update which has all the HL ,CS mods etc ,you don`t even need HL or any old mod installed .

Most servers are using Steam now and CS 1.6.

I find Steam full version with no old HL or mods on your system is best way of installing it,also try Driver Cleaner to remove any old drivers in registry then reinstall with latest official drivers.

Not using steam, using retail HL with CS mod. Thanks for the help, I'll try driver cleaner. I'm downloading the steam cache cs 1.6 installer right now, so I'll update here if that works.
