I pulled my weekly cash out of the ATM last week, $300 all in 20s and all the bills were very crisp, some sequential, all with a textured feel and they felt and smelled like construction paper. I ended up taking them into the bank to verify they were good. I guess they were just uncirculated, bank said they were just fine.

only 300?

I was watching total recall last night and in that movie future they had naked body scanners at subway stations. We have those now at airports. They also didn't use dollars they used electronic "credits" so I can only assume sometime in the near future the dollar is planned to go away so this won't be a problem.

What happens if you get caught trying to pass a counterfeit bill, but you thought it was legitimate (say you got it as change)? Do you get in trouble?

This works because people DON'T check the multiple security devices on the bills. The counterfeiters bleach the ink from low denomination notes, and reprint them as a high denomination. If the recipient only relies on the marking pen to verify authenticity, the phony bills work like a charm. All that the pen will tell you is that the paper is authentic.

I liked James Randi's explanation of what he does. He says he withdraws a bunch of money from the bank, lays it all out on a table, lightly sprays it with corn starch in water, then deposits them again. They're real bills but they'll fail the pen test because the pen only checks for starch :D

My friend is a manager at mcdicks and he was showing me some interesting fake bills mcdonalds had accepted. Overall the biggest giveaway was the feel of the paper. It looked really nice, but it felt very weak. Real money is stiff paper and it feels very textured. This fake money was a lot easier to bend and it didn't make creases when folded. It felt more like cloth.

Single bill, probably nothing. I had a $20 the checker at the store swore up and down was fake. I said it wasn't, they said it was and they would have to keep it. I called the police and ended up getting my bill back. If it had been fake they would have kept it and let me walk away.

I know I live in the low rent district but I have to admit that the problem of fake $100 bills has not had an impact on my life.

Sadly you can be fucked.

If not then anyone getting caught passing a bad bill could just say "shit man, this sucks I can't buy this $100 gift card for my dying aunt"

Around here they were bleaching fives and turning them into twenties, and a few cashiers admitted to looking at the watermark and not noticing that the president was different

No problem in my area, we're all rich.....

I think it's the feel/smell of the new bill too. Wasn't aware of the new $100 bill coming out Feb 2011. I rarely see that denomination.
Don't they have money counters/scanners to remove the bad ones?

I got caught trying to pass a $10 that I didn't know was fake. Made a thread about it here a couple months ago. I took it to the bank and lost the money.

The last time I actually saw or used a $100 bill was longer than I can remember. I mainly pay with plastic [debit or credit] unless I'm on a business trip in a foreign country -then it's mainly paper money.

I agree - get rid of the large denomination bills [anything over $20].

If you check the thread in the bill, I don't think you can be wrong unless it is a "super counterfeit" bill (rumor from N. Korea or Iran.

And you all laugh at colourful Canadian money. I'm sorry we can't change 5's into 50's and 10's into 100's.

There seems to be a counterfeiting problem with some Euro bills, or at least so the banks say.

A friend went to Spain recently, and withdrew €5000 over the counter. He was handed a stack of €500 bills. No trouble spending them.

He had a couple left when he went back to the UK, and tried to exchange them at the bank. 'No. We don't accept €100, €200 and €500 notes because of counterfeiting issues.'

We have been having a rash of counterfeit 100s reported in my area recently. I refuse them at the bank b/c I don't want to get stuck with one.

How are people even able to make legitimate looking bill with all the watermarks, colorings, and anti-counterfeiting measures they have in place with paper monies? I don't get how they can print something that would fool anyone.
