Problem with comp recognizing HD

Installed a new HD but the computer won't recongnize it?

Any ideas what is wrong?

This really isn't my computer, its a friend, but the way that he described it was that when he tried to save something all that was showing up was his old HD. He did a few scans and some checking and its not being recongnized.
 
If he's using XP, I wonder if it shows up in disk management under Computer management in Administriative tools in control panel?

Is it SATA or PATA? If SATA, make sure the drivers for the SATA controller are installed so that Windows will recognize it (the controller). Afterwards, use the drive tools that came with the drive or d/l the drive tools in order to format it.
