problem with cd copying

i recently bought a plextor 8432 cdwriter, and an oem raite 8x dvdrom (40x cdrom).

i have been creating data cds okay. however i have tried doing cd copying a few times and every time it created a coaster.

i am wondering if it could be the problem with the dvdrom having a small buffer (cant really check cos its oem and doesn't exactly have a manual). my friends had no problem copying cds i couldnt copy. i tried creating a cd image first without success.

oh yah... the errors i get are usually "buffer underrun" (even though i tried copying at 4x)

i am running a 400 mhz at 540 mhz, with 256 mb ram, with 1 5400 rpm (primary) and 1 7200 rpm hdd.

thanx! i tried doing copying with all my applications closed. it was okay until like 50% of the copying, when the same problem came again suddenly. does the fact that it copied okay for 50% mean anything?

Make sure that your cdrom can handle decent audio extraction levels. Having said this you should:

- try using your Plextor for reading and burning instead of using your cdrom for the reading
- make sure nothing is running in the background (control-alt=delete) except for systray and explorer
- enable DMA if possible
- with your burning program possibly increase your buffer cache
- try using Nero or CloneCd
- if you are burning an image first make sure you have defragged your drive so it's fresh
- make sure that your IDE setup is done properly. Your Plex should be Master on the Secondary IDE channel, your HDD should be Master on Primary and your cdrom should be Slave on Primary as a typical setup.

Your system looks good ... btw, what OS are you running? That could possibly cause some problems.

hmm... do i really have to do the cd copying at 1x ? i bought a 8x cd writer hoping to do the writing at at least 4x.

is it possible that the problem lies with the source drive i.e. the dvdrom i was copying the cd from? i am beginning to regret buying this oem drive and not buying a dvdrom with a more reputable brand. 🙁

hmm... thanx! that's alot of things i haven't thought about. but how do i use the plextor for reading and burning?

i am running windows 98 right now.
