Problem with case fan

Hey guys,

I know this isn't the "Computer Help" section but I figured I might get more answers here. In the last week, the top fan on my P182 started making a loud grinding sound every time it spins. It doesn't seem to be hitting against anything. Is this a sign of the fan dying or something? I've never had a problem like this before and don't really know what to do...

Thanks!

Sleeve bearings. They have a short lifespan when used in a horizontal position (like a top fan/blowhole). You could peel back the sticker and put some lubrication in there, but if you're planning on keeping that case/setup for a while it would be worth it to replace the fan.

Scythe S-Flex are probably the best price/performance (around $10-$12) for a non sleeve bearing fan. What setting did you have your Antec fan on? If low, get the 800rpm fan. If noise doesn't bother you, or you have a fan controller, get the 1600rpm version. The 1200 is a nice balance.

P.S. the Thermalright TR-FDB fans are the same fan, so if you can find them for cheaper go for it.

Other recommendations...if you want to spend a little more get one of the Noctua fans. If you want to spend less, just grab a low-speed Yate Loon for around $4.

Hey there,

Thanks for the advice. The case does have a fan controller. Which Noctua would you recommend if I went that route?

Probably the NF-P12. You could get away with the NF-S12, it's a little weaker, about the same noise, but if you can find it it'll be cheaper. Don't get the S12B though, that's the 800rpm one, only good if you need very light airflow and/or don't have a fan controller.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

WB is right though, they'll replace that fan in a heartbeat for free. I still stick by my suggestions.

Antec will send you a new fan, i have had them send me 3 so far(2 140mm and one 120mm). I just keep them for spares as I replaced them with YL fans.
