Ok so I went out and bought the Lite-On 24/10/40 for $145 CDN (with tax it came to $170CDN).

Anyway..so I install it on my machine which is WinXP on a P2-450 w/256MB RAM. I also install the Nero 5.5 that came with it.

Ok..so I burn the Mandrake8.1 ISO as a Mode2 image. I'm in awe as the burn completes in around 4 mins! Then I pop in the cd, nothing. The computer doesn't recognize anything in it. It looks blank. So I'm thinking...in the mean time I decide Ill burn another cd, this time a music one. So I burn it, again I'm in awe at the speed. It pops out..I play in the computer...doesn't work. Hmmm..so I play in the mini-system...works beautifully! So why won't my burner and regular cd rom drive read it??

My regular cd rom drive (Acer 36X) reads CDR/CDRWs fine..??

Also, I burnt both cds at a speed of 24X, when the media is only 16x certified. Could that be a difference?? The CDRs are Maxell CD-R 700MB.

Thanks for your time.

Sorry didn't mean to insult your intelligenence.

:)

Anyways it could be the media. I have seen problems like that before with media that was not up to snuff...

Yup, that's one of the symptoms of media being burned too fast. Able to be read in certain drives, but others choke on it.

Did you try pressed CD's to see if the burner can read them. I recently also purchased an Liteon 24x and it couldn't read anything but burned ok. RMAed it--got new one and everything is perfect now.

Uhm.. Wouldn't the next LOGICAL thing to do is burn at 16x and see what happens..? :)

I tried using the CDRW disc that came with the Lite-ON burner at 10X and I got the same result. It would read empty in the cdrom drives.

Do you have DMA enable in advanced setting on the ide controllers? Doesnt sound like a media problem to me. I have a LO 24x and burns everything i throw in ti. Maybe get the update for Nero or go here for more infoHere

<< Update..burned at 16x..and it works!! So..are there any 24x cdrs on the market?? >>

That's good to hear :)

Look for the Fuji 24X CDRs, they're manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, some of the best you can buy. I got two spindles of 50 of them for $30 just the other day at Fry's :D

Also that link i gave you in earlier post has some info on the firmware's for the drive, have you updated the firmware?. I have used kodak 8x, kingstonhypermedia 16x Imation 16x color and fuji 16x[TY] verbatim 16x, and all of them burn/read at 24x iso/cdj/audio/ccd/bin-cue and all work.

Thanks for all the help guys..

I also saw some Memorex 24x cdrs at FutureShop..but since I already bought a 30-pack of Maxell 16x cdrs...I'll have to use that first.
