problem with ATI control panel

ok, you can check my full systems stats in my profile below, but briefly I run a AMD XP 1800+ on a ECS K7S5A and use a retail Radeon 8500 64mb (usually not overclocked). I had some errors recently and had to reload drivers from scratch and I noticed a problem. The new drivers installed fine (catalyst 2.4) along with the new MMC (multi-media center) and the new DVD player but the problem occured when I installed the new control panel. As soon as I installed it the control panel would crash. When windows starts up that little ATI icon loads up in the task bar but not I get an error message telling me it has to close. This also happens whenever I right-click on the screen, click properties, hit the 'settings' tab, and then click advanced (this is to get to the menus with the AA, AGP speed, and other ATI options)

Anyone else have similar problems and know a fix? It is not really a huge deal as even after it crashes I still can access the menu, but if I can repair it I would like to. Thanks in advance

This is a problem I had before. Then I COMPLETELY uninstalled everything (drivers, MMC, dvd player, and control panel) till my system had to auto-install the basic drivers for the 8500 (winXP has built in 8500 drivers) Like I said, After a complete uninstall and reinstall I ran into this problem again after installing the control panel. Any ideas?

I don't think they require DX 9 as I don't have DX 9 installed but have been gaming with 2.4 for a week now. Either way, this is a problem I had with the 2.3's as well, it happened after I reloaded my computer. I am begging to wonder if tates was not right and somehow I still missed files from my old drivers when I uninstalled. I am going to play with that when I have time

I had a similar problem a while back. It turned out windows XP was going out to the internet to find the drivers. I unplugged the machine from the router. I was then able to install the drivers clean, and everything was fine. Whenever I update the ATI drivers I unplug my network cable.

hmmm, that could be. I still have not gotten around to a complete reinstall again as homework has kept me busy, but when I do I will unplug my comp to see if that helps. thanks for the advice

well, I tried the complete reinstall again, this time wiping the resgistry and every ati file on my comp, I even unplugged my network cable as suggested.... nada. I still have the problem, though this may help some of my games not crash due to conflicting driver files 🙂 Someday I will figure this out...
