1. i'm the top manager at fast food restaurant.
2. one employee has a problem with alcohol and not coming to work.
3. he's a nice guy but it's happened 3x already.
4. owner is a nice guy and tells me to give him a few chances.
5. today was his 4x missing work without calling in ~3 months.
6. should i fire him or keep him and cut his pay and hours?
7. he's a hard worker and most of the employees happen to like him as do i, so it's a tough call for me.

update
after reading all that everyone has mentioned, i've decided to try and be more of a friend than being a boss on a powertrip and firing him. i made an ultimatum of him to attend AA a minimum of once a week and to have a meeting with me after every pay period, which is usually when this occurs.

some think the fast food industry has an unlimited amount of people willing to take up minimum wage paying jobs and that is partly true. there are an unlimited amount of people that don't speak english, or are just plain stupid and/or lazy that would love having such a job. to have an employee that will work for minimum wage, can speak english, and is fairly intelligent is rather difficult to come by.

as for some of you thinking that i may be a fool or inept for asking such a question, well, you may be right. i have been involved in the full service restaurant industry for most of my life, but never fast food. i was sort of thrown into my current position, to help a friend out. i have only been doing this for ~4 months and am still learning.

i appreciate everyones comments and thank all of you for your input, especially geekbabe 🙂

How many times did he not show up after "4. owner is a nice guy and tells me to give him a few chances."

8. assist otherwise hard working employee by helping him get into treatment for his Alcohol abuse issues.

dude there is nothing wrong with a little bit of drinking. if he needs a ~1 day/month to chill out that's cool.. he's a good guy and people like him, so keep him aboard. you work at a fast food restaurant what do you expect? someone that's hard working and dedicated? you'll end up wasting your time hiring retard after retard if you fire him. get off your power trip and cut him some slack.. i'm sure his absence ever 30 days isnt making or breaking the company

fast food, means people need to go to work,
to cook the food.

That way when I go to Wendy's,Mc'D's etc I can get my food like in 3 mins.

Otherwise I will go to the local diner.

I don't think the loss of a minimum wage burger-flipping job is going to be adequate motivation for said alky to seek treatment.
The question here is whether or not the OP wants to continue to be an enabler.

Wtf?? Where's the "confront him and see what happens". Start with a nice confrontation, but firm, if it happens again, the very last chance, then fire him.
He's prolly having psychological problems though.

being a dick? if it was me he'd already be gone. 3 strikes and you're out. welcome to the real world

Fire immediately. If he's old enough to drink, he's old enough to stop fscking his life up on his own.

The owner said give him a few chances, so...
Tell the owner that you think that's this employee is negatively affecting the business and he's a more of a hindrance than an asset.
Tough situation, but YOU need to convince the owner that the employee needs to be fired ASAP.

If it's an absentee-owner, he probably doesn't realize what a PITA the drunk guy is.

Get him straight now or he will continue his behaviour.
Next time he comes to work, have him sign a warning document and make him aknowledge his mistakes.
If he does it again, well, FIRE HIM!
