1. i'm the top manager at fast food restaurant.
2. one employee has a problem with alcohol and not coming to work.
3. he's a nice guy but it's happened 3x already.
4. owner is a nice guy and tells me to give him a few chances.
5. today was his 4x missing work without calling in ~3 months.
6. should i fire him or keep him and cut his pay and hours?
7. he's a hard worker and most of the employees happen to like him as do i, so it's a tough call for me.
update
after reading all that everyone has mentioned, i've decided to try and be more of a friend than being a boss on a powertrip and firing him. i made an ultimatum of him to attend AA a minimum of once a week and to have a meeting with me after every pay period, which is usually when this occurs.
some think the fast food industry has an unlimited amount of people willing to take up minimum wage paying jobs and that is partly true. there are an unlimited amount of people that don't speak english, or are just plain stupid and/or lazy that would love having such a job. to have an employee that will work for minimum wage, can speak english, and is fairly intelligent is rather difficult to come by.
as for some of you thinking that i may be a fool or inept for asking such a question, well, you may be right. i have been involved in the full service restaurant industry for most of my life, but never fast food. i was sort of thrown into my current position, to help a friend out. i have only been doing this for ~4 months and am still learning.
i appreciate everyones comments and thank all of you for your input, especially geekbabe 🙂
