Problem with AGP speed

I have a P4 3.2ghz, 800 fsb, 1 gig ram, radeon 9800xt, with Windows XP Pro. Under displaysetting/advanced/smartgear my AGP speed is set to off. I know this is bad (has to be, right?). Everytime I try to change it to 4x or 8x speed I restart and it gets reset to off. In my BIOS my 'AGP Aperture Size' is set to 128 (does this need to be 256?), my 'Init Display First' is AGP, and my 'AGP Data Rate Capability' is set to '8X Mode' How can I make my AGP speed stay at 8x? Any help is appreciated and if you need any other information just let me know.

Install the Intel INF update from Abit`s website for your board here ,also try disabling fastwrites, let me know how it goes.

Btw there`s an older INF update at Intel`s website here ,

INF Update Utility [INFINST.EXE] (1428KB) 5.1.1.1002 12/12/2003 Download
This utility installs INF files that inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality such as USB and AGP.

Read Me (txt) Release Notes (htm)

OS: Windows* 2000, Windows* 98 SE, Windows* Me, Windows* Server 2003, Windows* XP Home Edition, Windows* XP Professional
.

I would install the Abit one.

I couldn't even enable fastwrite, it was greyed out. I downloaded Intels update (Abit's gave me a 'site could not be found error) and installed it. IT WORKED! It's set to 8x and now fastwrite is enabled. Do I want to disable that?
