Problem with a TP cable, please help

Czar

I have a cat 5 TP cable which runs from one floor to the other, I get a connection on the switch I have and it seems to be working there but I cant ping the computer, its like it is not there. I´m hoping its something else than the cable because it was a bitch getting it there :disgust:

Could it be that the crappy HP NIC on the NT machine just isnt good enough, the cable is rather long, about 8m or so. But it should be ok. The other machine has a 3com NIC.

I´m going to change the nic on the nt machine tomorrow, but anyone have an other ideas?

Did you purchase your cables or make them?

The vast majority of the time, home-made cables made by folks that don't understand cabling are the problem. The most frequent occurrances (other than total failure) is that they work OK at 10Meg/half duplex, but won't work at 100meg/full duplex.

Check the usual stuff: TCP/IP enabled on both(optionaly/additional/alternate: netbeui/netbios), IP addresses are assigned (properly) on both, the machines should be in a single workgroup, each machine should have its own name.

But the best chance is that it's your cable(s).

Good Luck

Made them myself and I´v done that quite many times before though it sometimes goes wrong. I get on the switch the light for 10mbit and 100mbit connection so at least some part of the cable is working.

The problem is that when I set in the 3com nic nt wouldnt recognize it no matter what I did so I´m going to install nt again and see how it goes.

everything else was fine.. I´ll report back when I´v installed it again.

Try pinging the IP address of each NIC from their respective computers. If you can ping the NIC in the computer you are on then you know that TCP/IP is setup properly on each computer. If this is the case, then you most likely have a cabling problem.
