Not sure if this belongs here or in another forum, but hopefully this is the correct forum for this question/problem. I tried putting this in the Peripherals forum but didn't get any responce.
My boss has a PNY Attache 2GB flash card that he has been using for about 6 months. He was beginning to run out of space and was looking at buying a 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Mini. Then he started having problems where his computer wouldn't recognize the drive when inserted into either of the front USB slots. So I inserted my 512MB SanDisk flash drive into his computer and it loaded just fine. Figured it might be the card.
So I then took his PNY card and put into my computer. It loaded fine.
My boss figured he would just get the new 4GB card because he was going to need it anyway. The new 4GB card came in and I took both cards to my computer so I could transfer all his files. When I started to move the files from the PNY card to a temporary folder on my desktop, I got a Error saying "Cannot copy "File Name": Cannot find the specified file." Everytime this message appeared, the drive would disappear from the "My Documents" window and then reappear a few moments later. I kept getting this message if I tried moving more than a few folders at a time. As long as I only moved a few folders I didn't have any problems. So I continued by just moving a few folders at a time so I could just get everything off the card. Once I was done, the total size of the temporary folder was around 1.6GB. I inserted the new 4GB SanDisk card, opened the temporary folder and selected all the files, then I moved everything to the new card. It took a little while but everything transfered without any problems.
So I reformatted the PNY card to FAT32 to make sure it was clean. I tried transfering small files and it was ok. I tried transfering a 100mb file, and it gave me the same error...
Error Copying File or Folder
Cannot copy "File Name": Cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct path or file name.
So I then went into the "properties" of the drive and selected the "Error-Checking" option under the "Tools" tab. I ran that and then tried transfering the 100mb file again. That seemed to help since this time it transfered. So I decided to transfer a folder, with subfolders and files, that was a total size of 792mb. About halfway through, it gave me the same error message as before. I cleared everything and tried again, about have way through it gave me an error but this time it was different. It read...
Error Copying File or Folder
Cannot copy "File Name": The specified network resource or device is no longer available.
The error doesn't seem to matter if I'm moving or copying to the drive. Nor is it specific to a certain file, each time the error message pops up it reads a different file.
So my questions are...
Does anyone have an idea of whats causing these errors?
Is there a utility or program I can use to scan or fix this drive?
Any other suggestions?
So if anyone knows or has an idea of whats causing this and what can be done to solve the problem, I would appreciate the help. If we can salvage this drive, that would be great. Or is this flash drive junk now?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
