I just bought a 200gb maxtor SATA drive.
When installing windows XP on it it displays that the partition is only 137000 or something very close. After installation it displays in windows that it is a drive of 125Gb.

Can annyone inform me about what I do wrong.

Try updating your motherboards BIOS to the latest version, making sure you have latest patches for Win XP, then search the MS knowledge base for Hard Drive size" or something.
That knowledge base should help if the first 2 steps don't make it work.

Are you using some sort of IDE controller card for it?

I have the same problem with my WD 160gb hard drive thats plugged into the IDE card that came with it. Updating the card's driver from windows fixes it. Its a pain in the ass, but it only has to be done once every time you reinstall windows

Edit: Oops, missed the 'SATA' part. I guess the IDE card stuff doesn't apply, but check the MSI site for updated windows SATA drivers?

FYI, using search would tell you the problem is that Windows XP needs service pack 1 to support drives above 120 GB.

If you don't want to look up "slipstream" you can format a small partition now, install XP and SP1, then format the rest of the drive as a second partition (D: drive)

Can't you merge the partitions after that? Or something to give him one partition as he wants.

I don't know what you mean with "slipstream". but still ther must be a possibility to have one partition; I already have 3 drives installed now.

Sure, but Acronis Partition Expert costs $49.

Well OK,

i tried to install service pack 1 for XP. But it is no longer on the list. can do many updates, but not longer service pack 1 is available.

What's the news on that,

i have the same problem with the same hdd (different mobo, asus k8n-e). you'll need partition magic to get that space back. in my case i installed xp-pro with no sp (1 or 2). i installed sp2 after. i didn't know how to slipstream xp. i really don't want to install all those programs again so i have to wait for a friend in IT to "lend me" a copy of partion magic so i can correct this.

Yes, now I remember slepstreaming. It is installing SP2 in XP disc, and making a new one from it.

Ok, tell me how to do it anyone, where can one get the install file for it. I suppose not from windows update?

I i'm installing it right now, but would not mind do dow it again.

Well all is fine now. Ihave a SP2 XP disc now.
Had some problems with the onboard sound. Had to install a pci soundcard creative SB128.

don't know what is causing this, perhaps SP2?
