Every time i try to install SP3 i get the message "failed to install components". Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Yes. Microsoft is aware of it.
You can manually install all the components by going to the update page and getting names and searching for them individually.
I've had to do it on several machines in the last month. You will come to each individual download to get them when u Google the update number.
One that doesn't work is for "Windows Defender" as far as I can tell.
If you don't have success with the input of the genuine code the first time , I haven't found a way to install it at all.
The validator goes to a "sorry" page.

On one machine I was able to uninstall SP3, install all custom updates available , then reinstall SP 3 successfully.
On the rest I wasn't.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows.!!???!!.

I have the same problem, but I'm only offered sp3, not each update..

How can I locate what individual updates I need to google?

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the instructions given in the microsoft link didn't help. It seems that SP3 is a pain in the ass to install.

Use the "custom" install option.
Run the install and then go back and look for the failed to install updates.
Copy and paste one at a time in google and install individually.
Once you have all the desired pre SP3 updates , check "don;t show this again" for the remaining updates.
After all pre SP3 are installed, you can install sp3 and should be good to go in the future.

Unfortunately this method doesn't work because the only failed to install update is the SP3 itself (KB936929)

Actually, if you have SP2, and all subsequent updates, and auto update turned on, it really installs itself now.
