problem w/IE & Firefox after updates

Hi,

This is a strange problem.

After updating firefox with the latest update I couldn't connect to the Internet. Then after updating IE with the latest hotfix it stopped connecting. I have Avant (which uses IE) and it worked until I updated it, than Avant stopped working, I had an old install of Avant and reinstalled the older version, than it worked again. I also have Safari for Windows and it still works, though it hasn't been updated. I have XP sp2.

Any ideas?

Thx.

My first thought is that you have a software firewall blocking the new versions of your browsers.

I thought so and checked and the firewall allows both--but why Avant which uses the IE engine works fine in the old version, but the upgrade that came out after the IE upgrade, does not work, but when I revert back to the old Avant version it works again, same computer settings, it has to be something the Firefox and IE upgrade does, I would think.

Try this:
(a) Firefox Tools drop down menu / Options / Advanced tab /Network tab / Settings button / make sure the radio button for "Direct Connection to the Internet" is checked.

(b) It could be either your firewall or your antivirus application need to be told to allow Firefox to be trusted to communicate. So look into the settings for each of those applications and re-establish permission for FF to communicate as necessary.

As for the IE side of your problem, I can't comment. I won't use IE, except for WIndows updates.

Thanks.
I checked the connection and it is correct; this problem only happened when I upgraded ie and firefox; and avant, but when I used an old install of avant, it worked again. I also have safari for windows and it works. it is something that the upgrade does, I'm sure...

You could try uninstalling whatever update you recently installed and see if it works
ok. If it does, then the update, did in fact cause the problem. If not, try a system restore
to a date one or two days before the problems began. Sometimes, that will fix it.

I went to Mozilla to try and find an older install, but saw a recent item in support about not being able to connect after updating...they had a link to symnatec's site. There they recommended deleting the old rule and adding a new rule. I guess it wasn't enough the Firewall was set to allow access. Since the program was updated the rule needed to be updated for the update...

so now both ie and firefox work! Thanks bruceb for leading me down that path of trying to install an earlier version, otherwise I wouldn't have seen that...because I checked my firewall program several times and each time it said allow--who would have guessed!

Glad yo fixed it ... and fyi, when possible I always keep all the older versions of programs I downloaded
or installed. It takes up some drive space, but sometimes, you need the old one. For example, last week
I let Motorola Phone Tools update itself, then it would not see my V3M phone. Had to revert to the prior
version thru my Ghost Image which I had made that morning. Turns out, motorola has a bad release
and that issue should be fixed with the next update.
