ok, there are probably numerous forums or guides that answer this question but i didn't find any. i just finished assembling my system and installed windows. but i found that my cpu clock speed is 798 mhz. i didnt change anything at all. its the first time ive used an athlon xp mobile. here are my system specs:

athlon xp mobile 2400+ (non OC, stock heatsink)
asus a7n8x-deluxe (rev 2.0, bios rev 1013)
512 mb corsair xms 3200
80 gb seagate ultraata 100
ati radeon 9800 pro 128 mb
thermaltake 480w (forgot the rest of the name, though it had "Xaser" in it)

is it normal to have the athlon xp 2400+ mobile labeled w/ a speed of 798 mhz? or is it a problem? is there anything i can do to fix the problem? everything is at default setting.

any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

In the BIOS, there will be some settings you need to check. I don't know how they're labeled exactly off the top of my head but they will be something like: Multiplier, Front Side Bus, Memory speed.

They're probably set incorrectly (they were for my 2400+ mobile).

i accessed the bios before... they were labeled something like: CPU External Frequency, CPU Frequency Multiple, Memory Timing.. are these what you mean? if so, what settings would you suggest?

lil function that throttles ur cpu down when not under load 2 save power...u can tell if its working by using a real time clock speed app- google something called thgclock and d/l it then run it while doing something that runs the cpu flat out-ripping an mp3 maybe- should see the clock speed jump 2 whatever a 2400+ mobile should run at...

there's prob a much easier way but i forget now :)

That's what I mean (I downloaded the manual and was poking through it to update). :)

I'm not sure exactly what they should be. The CPU Frequency Multiple might be 6.5-7 or 13.5 (I'm not sure ), and the frequencies would be 133 Mhz. You can try setting the multiplier to 6.5 and the frequencies to 133 (which is 266DDR), and if that doesn't give you the right speed (~1800mhz), then try the 13.5.

I've managed to overclock mine to 2ghz without much problem.

My motherboard (NF7-S) didn't recognize my Athlon XP Mobile 2400, I'm guessing due to the unlocked multiplier..but it wasn't an issue. Just go into bios and adjust them, stock setting I believe is multiplier of 13.5 on FSB speed of 133 = clock speed of 1795 Mhz. Depending on you're motherboard and the cpu you got it should be able to run a lot faster on stock cooling with no problems. I run mine at a bit over 2 Ghz, a lot of people run it a lot higher with no issues. Should check the threads in the CPU / Motherboard forums to see typical results, there's tons of threads on this same topic. Good luck!

The motherboard is not going to recognize the default speed of the XP-M because the mobile chip is not designed to fit into a desktop motherboard. If you go into system properties your motherboard will name your processor as "Unknown CPU typ". This is a very easy fix. Like n0cmonkey stated, go into your BIOS (usually by hitting your delete key when starting up). Goto Advanced chipset features and change the CPU interface to expert(if your motherboard allows it). From there, scroll down to resulting frequency and change the MHz to about 166. Last go into CPU Ratio/Voltage Control. Change the CPU Ratio to 11. Hit F10 and reboot. When your up and running, go into system properties again, it should read 1800+ MHz. I hope this helps!

thanks alot guys!!

i finally got it fixed as per n0cmonkey's info. turns out the multiplier was set to 6.0 (although it was labeled "14.0x" in the mobo bios). i found that out after messing w/ the settings a lot and checking CPU-Z for the info. i tried changing the multipliers, but as i set it to 13.5, it went to 731.5. i realized the mobo's bios multipliers were labeled wrong (i think). for some reason, even after seeing through the mislabling, there was no 13.5 multiplier (it stopped at 12.5), so i set it at 12.5 (ended up 1.670) and so i changed the external frequency to 166, and now it's at 2.09 ghz. it's labeled as "unknown cpu type" but i don't think that really matters (does it?). i think i finally understand how overclocking works (that was my first time changing bios settings) thx A LOT guys!!!

btw, is a cpu temp of 44C hot for 2.09 ghz in stock cooling? (just curious)

Congrats on getting it working. I'm not sure what the heat specs are for that processor... Good luck with that! (searching around the forums might give you an answer)

Remember, if you are going to overclock the processor, use prime95 as a diagnostic tool. Stress test the processor(I personally use the "blend" feature) for at least 24hrs. to check for stability. If you find no errors within that time period, your system will be good to go.

No, not at all. My Athlon XP1800+ at 166Mhz x 10.0, 1.525v, gets to 40-42C. Yours is ~400Mhz faster. Those temps are fine.
