Problem Updating to Windows 7 SP1

I have been fighting with this for a couple of days now. My Windows 7 Home Premium PC won't update to SP1. I tried both the stand-alone SP1 installer and the normal Windows Update route without any success. Windows Update downloads SP1 but fails soon after starting the installation. The stand-alone SP1 executable fails too. Both produce the same error 8004100E. I can't find anything meaningful about that error number through "Googles".

I tried stopping the Windows Update service and cleaning out the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder with no luck. It only lets Windows Update download SP1 again with the same failure during installation.

This is a genuine copy of Windows that came pre-installed on a Dell PC.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For me it was my ATI drivers that had been uninstalled by Drive Sweeper. I followed the instructions I found here and re-installed Drive Sweeper and restored the backup of the deleted files and then SP1 installed with no issues. Of course after that I had to uninstall and reinstall my Catalyst drivers but now all is well. If you have an ATI card and used Drive Sweeper check it out.

I have never used, Drive Sweeper, but I have been leaning toward uninstalling the ATI driver temporarily. I will try that tonight.

I never really had problems with Microsoft Updates before. Win 7 SP1 installed with no problems on two self-installed Win 7 Ultimate PCs and a Dell-installed Win 7 Premium laptop. This was another Dell-installed Win 7 premium, so I don't know why it should be havng problems.

I will try removing ATI drivers (and maybe letting Windows install the generic ones). If that does not work, I will just leave it alone. It's the HTPC, so it is not too critical. All those patches are available separately anyway, and Windows updates seem to install correctly - just not the SP1.

And, it may soon be time for another HTPC anyway.

For those who are interested, there are some detailed instructions here on how to fix a problem caused by the use of Driver Sweeper: http://forum.phyxion.net/viewtopic.php?id=17&p=5. The program deleted some ATI driver files that are native to W7, and which are required to install SP1.

I finally got SP1 to install, after downloading a backup file created by the author of Driver Sweeper, changing permissions on certain Windows folders, installing the backup files, running the System Update Readiness Tool, and then downloading and installing SP1. This final combination of steps worked for me.

I hope that info helps someone. As for me, I am giving up. I never had Driver Sweeper, so I don't really want to get too deep into that sequence of steps. I tried uninstalling ATI drivers through the Control Panel in hopes it would make a difference. But it didn't. I will let it be for a few months, and then it will be time for a PC replacement.

If you haven't already, you can try running the Microsoft System Update Readiness Tool. That might catch some problems.

I tried that multiple times. It takes forever to run and seems to do absolutely nothing on my PC.

I'm running into this damn problem as well. Error code is 80073712. Sfc.exe didn't fix it, the update troubleshooter didn't fix it, I'm downloading the readiness tool now. Is it that damn hard to write an update that installs without this kind of BS?

And the readiness tool is corrupt. FU MS.

It didn't find any problems. :|

would be very curious as to what your (or anyone with probs) MGA diag. looks like
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
Run it and click copy, then paste it here and put quote tags around it

Also noticed with some quick googling an "in place upgrade" seems to work on bugged systems. I guess this would require an SP1 slipstreamed DVD, or original Win 7 SP1 ISO

RT7Lite has a very nice SP1 integrator, but you must use the 2.60 beta (X86 and X64 are separate) since 1.70 doesnt have it.

Definitely want to run SP1 with all AV FW off and UAC slider down - all USB disconnected, router modem off, no wireless HW, no cardreader etc.

I dimly recall reading that some folks running Microsoft Security Essentials had difficulty installing the SP1 beta, so disabling or uninstalling your security software would be well worth trying.

yes, you recall correctly
http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/977942-windows-7-sp1-refuses-to-install-on-my-computer/
kinda crazy that an MS program craps out a service pak install

Can also happen to peeps using Win 7 hacks/patches/loaders
Or those blocking certain updates

Hints can also be found in CBS log
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/4d4e31b3-ff50-4ea5-9e86-8d90ae34002f

rather oddly, a defrag often helps

Yeah, I've been wondering if somebody at Microsoft is attempting to make life difficult for folks running software that they don't approve of....

BTW, your CBS log link is erroneously pointing to an ASUS website and not the forum link you intended.
