Problem updating Radeon Win98 driver

Thump553

I get a failure everytime I try to update my drivers to 7085 & now when I try to go back to the beta (7087?) I was using. Thought I did everything right-uninstalled old drivers, set to plain-jane VGA, reboot & then try install.

I am consistently getting errors in the installation process-along the lines of "unable to complete installation, use standard VGA." Sometimes error message title line says "Severe."

System is Win98SE, classic athlon 750, Abit Ka7 motherboard, 384 MB ram (Mushkin & Crucial). No overclocking. DirectX8a & latest 4 in 1's (4.29) successfully installed.

BTW, I was doing this update because I get frequent lockups in Diablo 2. Anyone know of any issues between Radeon & Diablo 2?

I had a similar problem when I installed the Radeon which ultimately required format & reinstall all. Hopefully not that again.

Go to rage3d.com and go check out their installation guide. It is somewhat tedoius, but makes sure that all of your prevoius traces are gone. IMHO, you should probably use the 7072's. They work in every game fine for me, and performs fairly well (the 7075's gave me HUGE HUGE HUGE artifacts in Giants:CItizen Kabuto.)

Arod's advice was right on.

I did the manual clean of registry that rage3d suggested, and a manual install of the new drivers (vs. using ATI's installer) & everything now great.
