Problem staying online

I have an older pc, win.98 with a rockwell modem 56k. The past few days, when i am online for awhile, i get thrown offline and a window pops up and says: "Your connection to iwvisp (which is my internet provider) has been terminated, would you like to reconnect". It even does this when I am playing a game on multiplayer.

I called my internet service, and they said it may be a timout. That timeout never happend before. I would leave it online for 3 or 4 hrs and never get a timout but occasionaly. So i explained it even happens while playing a multiplayer game (Red Alert 2 on Gamespy), and they said that shouldnt happen. They said it may be my phoneline, (which I have a long line coming from a phone jack from a difernt part of the house to my pc), or it may be my modem. I reinstalled the modem by going to Settings/control panel/modems. Tryed it and after 40 min or so, or playing a game it happend again.

Could it be a phone jack problem, my extra long phone line, or modem? Or could it be that the acess numbers i use to dial up have a new kind of timeout? And would a timeout have that "Your Connection has been Terminated messege? Any suggestions? Thanks :)

1. Is there any way can you test it to a closer phone jack? Anybody else in the household having the same problem
2. You might want t consider DSL since you live in Cali, SBC DSL is pretty decent price these days.

I dont have a closer jack right now Newbie, but am getting one installed so I can troubleshoot this. There are no other phones or people in the house, just me. Only thing it is going to be 2 weeks before they get to it to install one :(. Then I can see if it is the jack. I am also buying another phone line to replace the one i have just to see if that will do the trick, which i dont think it will.

As far as dsl and cable, my budget wont allow it right now, but will still check if the price has droped. And where I live, it is in the boonies, and I am almost certain they dont have cable or dsl here yet.

you may also want to demo Symantec's Connection Keep Alive program, it's bundled with Norton Systemworks, but I believe you can get it separately also. I have used long phone cords before and have never had a problem with dial-up...even though now I use Cable...but that's a different story.

Any suggestions on a good spyware remover? I am trying to find one but no luck. I never heard of spyware before, it sounds like a virus. Is it possible I have a virus?. I never used virus protection since I never realy download anything. So far, I havent got thrown offline today with that terminating messege, just once earlyer, but it could happen anytime. Also am checking on the Symantec's Connection Keep Alive. I hope these work. Thanks.

I tryed the spyware out but i couldnt find anything. I will look further into it tomorrow and do a better spyware scan. I'll check out the spybot too. I did find a file called blowfish.dll it is in my game's folder for Red Alert, and it supposedly has spyware in it. Anyone familiar with that file, and if it would have anything to do with my problem i am having? Thought id mention that and give it a shot. Thanks for all the replys.

Well I tryed about 3 diferent spyware removal programs, and still I am having the same problem. After so many minutes, I get booted offline with that dreaded termination mesege. Even when I am not idle, it still happens :( My next shot is a new phone line extention, then the jack. If it isnt that or a new modem, it has to be the dial up access numbers i guess. Any more sugestions on what this may be?

My 56k always disconnects many times when i'm playing multiplayer games, surfing the web, etc. I've had this problem for a couple years and have not found the answer. If you find the answer, let me know. PM ME!!:D ....my ISP said that it was for security reasons or some nonsense.
