problem setting up lan

i am trying to attached 3 systems to a cable modem thu a router. 2 of the systems are working just fine. the third one says fatal error can't read IP configuration.
i never seen this error message before .system is running 98 and windows claims the lan card is working and i switched cables. i have the same lan card in my system and compared settings. i don't know what to check next

On the box that doesn't work open a DOS window and type ping 127.0.0.1 , that will at least tell you if TCP/IP is installed correctly and working. Something else to try is to take the NIC to the other working boxes and swap them, see if the problem follows. Im thinking its a driver issue and re-install of the NIC might be in order.

i tried using ping and got a transmit failed message and a error code 10043
i try re-installing the nic. the router comes with a firewall so i was wondering if there could be a conflict between the firewall and some of the software, there is a lot of programs being loaded during startup.

Do you have some sort of PPPoE dialing software on that PC? If so, remove it.

You said that you problems pinging the NIC's loopback (127.0.0.1), if can't ping the NIC, the something is wrong with it. Try with a different NIC and see what happens.
