my brother picked up a new laptop last night, which I'm setting up right now. It's an HP zd8215us, with the following specs:

XP Pro/MCE
2.8ghz P4
128mb x600 video
512mb ddr2
80gb 4200rpm hdd
17" glossy screen

I installed HL2 on it and loaded it up. It runs like a dog with a limp :p I have to put it on 1280x800 with lowest settings all around to get it to run smoothly. What's going on? I have a Gateway with a 2.0ghz a64, 2gb ram, and 64mb 9600 video and it runs fantastic at high res at 1280x800. Is it mostly a system ram issue? Would dropping in another gig of ram for total of 1.25gb do the trick?

Yes I would definately add more ram. Its hard to run these newer games on anything less than 1gb and a good video card. Update your drivers for the x600 too.

Should be a little better than that still. I could run 1280x1024 with a 3200+, 512mb ddr, 9800 Pro. Try closing down all other programs before playing HL2, and yeah drivers could help.
