problem renewing IP address

edit: ipconfig /renew gives an error:
Windows IP Configuration
Unable to contact DHCP server

i'm having problems renewing my IP address. it's connecting to an auto private address.
i've tried ip /release followed by ipconfig /renew

Please advice.

Please advise? Is the ethernet cable plugged in? need more info for more advise.

Is this being plugged into a router? switch? verify your physical connection. make sure the link lights on the back of your NIC are in good status. Your router would act as a DHCP server (basicly assigning your IP address). Make sure that your IP and DNS server is optained automaticly in your TCP/IP settings if your connecting to a router. If connecting directly to the internet, veryify your TCP/IP settings with your ISP.

It is plugged in directly into the port.
It is autoconfiguring the IP address and ipconfig /release does not work.

What address are you getting? What port are you plugged into, a router, switch, hub, modem????? What is that device plugged into?
