Problem Reconnecting to Internet

If I make a new install of Windows 2000 and set up an internet connection (dial up) I have no problem. But if for any reason I have to set up another connection, or change something about my existing one, whenever I get bumped off the internet, or disconnect on purpose, I can't reconnect. It dials up, and connects to my ISP, but it won't finish establishing the connection. To recover I have to restart the machine. But if I make a fresh install of Windows, and set up a new connection, I can connect and disconnect at will. Does anyone else have this problem? Were you able to overcome it? It's highly annoying, a real PITA.

I've got Windows 2000, IE 5, but I'm currently downloading IE 6 in the vain hope that it will fix this, and I'm using dial up on a Lucent Winmodem. If you need any more info tell me. Thanks for any help.

Yes, I have had that prblm with XP.
Read the thread about the Netgear R314 Router .
They think it is the router, but I don't use a router, just hub with 2 computers sharing.

I get bumped off when both are taxing the connection. My DSL is 1.5mb/s and when both are on and browsing, it is running almost 1.6mb/s dnld.
don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I get bumped off the inet and my Lan is still up. all settings are the same and all services are still running. None have been shutdown, nor any error posted.
Have to reboot the server in order to regain inet.

I did have a problem with connecting and not being able to browse. That was due to settings in the connection.
I had installed services in the Inet connection that were interfering. Can't remember which ones you need but if you need that info, pm me or ask. We have some very good net techs here (not me).
