Windows 98 sees the CD ROM and some CD's will work. Other CD's, that work in other machines, don't. I get "D:/ Is Not Accessable
The Drive Is not Ready" What's up with that?

Are these non-readable CD's originals or copies of something else. If they are copies, what brand? Some "cheaper" CD-ROM's can be picky on the brand of CD media. Also, is the CD-Rom on other computers the same as the one that doesn't read?

The CD's are both OEM and PNY CD-R's. The CD ROM's are different brands. A Creative 8X in the machine with the problem and a Pacific Digital (DVD) in the other machine.

I would think it's a drive problem.
New cd-rom drives are fairly cheap.
I've had some problems with older LG CD-rom drives.
You could upgrade to a DVD-rom drive.

The 8x is the problem in that its laser is having trouble reading the discs(i.e. old and needs replacing had to do it on a P120 430FX machine ...crappy thing would not even recognize a Genuine MS Win98SE disc or the copy thereof) and the PacDigi DVDRom ...what are the specs of the machine? PacDigi DVDRom (12x itsa picky drive ..reads DVDs fine tho ) I have is slow to spinup and sometimes fails to read on first attempt have to eject wipe(I use those nice optical wipes a g/f gets from the optometrist's office she works in) in straight line from inside edge to outside rim of disc then reinsert then it reads it (oh ans for you cheapo versus TaiyoYuden is the best ...use mostly CompUSA 100 spindles ..Princo ...and TDK...GA plant ..as well as Imation)

My Delta 12x DVD drive has a similar problem but only on occasions. My solution is to eject the disk if it looks like it's having trouble, then reinsert it. Usually works without a hitch on the second try.

EDIT: As far as CD-R brands, my favorite is TDK. I've had mixed luck with Memorex. Imation is good too, though I usually buy TDKs.

The machine is an older P133 with 32MB RAM. It's a friends machine, she want to give it to her daughter to use as a word processor and to surf. Re inserting the disk has no effect on reading it. It seems like it will read some disks but not others.
