I am now trying to put in the hard drive. I have a maaxtor 160gb diamond 9 and a asus p4p800 motherboard. The hard drive came with a ide cable but I was wondering how if I can hook it up with the ata cable that came with the motherboard.

You cant use the serial ATA cable with an IDE hard drive, if thats what you meant. Just use the IDE cable that came with the hard drive

This is not correct, while you cannot use a SATA cable to connect directly to an IDE HDD,
you can use the onboard SATA if you purchase a converter. Such as Highpoint or I2S ect.
