Problem printing in Windows XP

I'm asking this for a friend who is having what seems to be a strange problem. When he tries to print on his PC running Windows XP what happens is he clicks on "file" then "print". Ordinarily when you click "ok" the file should start to print but what happens is a window comes up asking "save file as" and the choice is to save the file or cancel, if he clicks cancel nothing prints. This also happens when he tries to print on his girlfriends computer. I never came across this, I'm never asked if I want to save the file, it just prints if I click print then "ok".
The really strange thing to me is that it's happening on more than one computer. At first he told me it was happening when trying to print from IE but I had him try from notepad and he gets the same thing. Does anyone have any idea why he's getting the "save file as" window instead of it just printing?
