I just built a new system that has a LiteOn 16x DVD drive and a LiteOn 12x10x32 CD-RW drive. Both are connected to the secondary IDE controller with the DVD set to master and the CD-RW set to slave. Motherboard is an EPOX 8KHA+. When I play a CD in either drive, it plays just fine until I try to use the other CD drive at the same time. Then the music starts and stops repeatedly until the other drive is finished doing it's thing. Is this due to the fact that they are both on the same controller? I believe this is the recommended setup per the instructions that came with the drives. Should I make one of the drives a slave to the hard drive on IDE 1?

Most likely.

Make sure both drives have DMA enabled. If DMA is enabled and you still have the problem, you might want to consider getting a cheap PCI controller card to give you some added IDE connectors. Having everything as a single device on its own controller will give you the best performance.

I would switch the DVD drive to slave on the primary and have the burner as master on the secondary. Thats hould solve your problem without having to get a controller card.
