I am having trouble overclocking my duron. I did the pencil trick fine. I am using an Abit KT7raid motherboard and windows 2000 is my OS. I am able to oc it to 1050@1.85v and it can run prime 95 no problem. However if I play unreal eventually it might freeze and when I reboot win2000 will not get past the start up screen. It just sits there and so I have to reinstall win2k. It has done this at 1000 and 950mhz as well. What is my problem? Oh btw I have a duron 600.

I was only able to successfully overclock my Duron to 850 MHz, but run it at 800 MHz for complete system stability. I was able to post at 950 MHz, but it wouldn't go any farther than that. If you're getting errors or freezes, you need more voltage, which means your out of luck at the moment since the KT7 only goes to 1.85v :frown:

I have some friends that are using duron 600s to overclock, and the all can run stable at 1ghz. You may want to check your temp...They are using a vantec cooler with a case fan instead of the normal cpu fan, and they keep their temp down to 35C.

Note:
Just because someone says all their friends have been able to do it doesn't mean that your chip can do 1G. It just means that they are all very lucky people who probably got all their chips from the same batch which happens to be a good one.

There are plenty of Duron 600s out there that don't break 900MHz, and it isn't a heat problem either.

ok even at 800@1.85v it screws up. I'm playing unreal tournament. Then eventually it froze and when I reboot i get into the win2k screen and it just sits there and there is nothing i can do but reinstall win2k. Is this a win2k problem?

AirAlex: Have your read the KT7 FAQ page? Go here for the goods:

ABIT KT7 & KT7-RAID FAQ

Your problem sounds more like a problem with the way you installed everything on initial setup. The key thing is that the VIA 4 in 1 drivers MUST be installed FIRST before any video or sound card drivers. This will lead to games freezing (I had this problem until I figured out the correct way to set it up). Read the FAQ file, do a format, and install the all the drivers as described on that page. It worked for me. Good luck.

Hmmm still no luck... I mean if i oc it too much that shouldn't effect win 2000 booting up would it?? i mean i can't even get into win2k... it just stays at the win 2000 startup and freezes like halfway through... which means i have to reinstall win2k cause it does nothing... even putting it back to 600 doesn't do anything. is it win2k?

ok n/m i installed the register fix. But still eventually it gets stuck at the win2k load up screen and then i have to reinstall win2k. I've must have reinstalled win2k like 10 times at least. This is frustrating :(

What kind of devices are you using? ACPI puts all of your devices on the same IRQ, and not all devices like that.

Go back to the basics...

You need to find where the trouble is. PULL every card you have in your computer. Set the BIOS to the defaults and disable any onboard sound, serial ports (except the one for the mouse) and the printer port. FDISK, FORMAT and start from scratch. After you get a basic install running start to add devices on step at a time. Good Luck.

AirAlex,

I thought you said your computer ran using WIN95? Why would you start swaping parts because of an OS issue (possible but I doubt that is the case)????? Someone else said something about a IRQ conflict in a previous post, I would guess it may be that (WIN2000 could be reassigning a IRQ I suppose) but I still think you have a card/device that just isn't getting along with WIN2000.

Hmm i turned off the ACPI and so far so good... It's running at 1050@1.8v and it plays unreal fine for the past 2 days... I just hope I didn't jinx myself. Thanks a lot guys!
