Hi.
I need help on problem with my ECS L7SOM(ver.3.0) w/ AMD Athlon 1.2 ghz.(Retail).
I installed w/ retail cpu fan and heat sink, system will boot normal into Windows XP. But when I upgrade to several other fan and heat sink(Volcano 5,6; GC68 w/ Panaflo), system will start for 2-3 seconds and shut off.

It sounds like the motherboard is cutting off power to the CPU. Are you using some kind of thermal-transfer compound between the heatsink and the CPU core? (hopefully yes) Another possible cause: the motherboard might need a RPM signal on the CPU-fan header, and perhaps you are plugging the new fan into some other header, or perhaps the fan you're using does not send an RPM signal. The Panaflo, for instance, does not send RPM signals.

Also, you might be putting the heatsink on 180 degrees backwards. Look at the base of the heatsink and you will see that one end has a step cut into it. This step must be at the solid end of the CPU socket, or your heatsink cannot touch the CPU core squarely.

I realize Panaflo only has 2 wires(blue and red). No RPM wire on this fan. Does it make difference?
I will try using different fan which has 3 wires, and let you know.

It worked perfectly after I installed GC68 and original fan (3 wires).
Thanks for your info.

Also I want to know which direction of fan supposed to blow. (onto HS / away from HS)

Cool, glad it's working out for you :D It may be possible to disable that feature which was shutting the system down, look in the BIOS if you want to do that. The fan should blow air onto the heatsink, usually.
