My cousin just gave me her comp and asked if I could reformat her system coz. there was lots of junk in it and it was problems ........I said fine ok as usual........and now I cant install any kind of MS OS..........she was running windows 98 previously.........I wonder how it had been installed previously.........I've tried win98, win98se, winme, win2k with sp2 and winxp pro......every time I tried to setup the OS it just hangs up during the file transfer....restarting and trying to continue doesn't help............Win2k and Win XP gave me stop errors during installation........it couldn't even goto till the partition screen .......here are some details of the error - STOP :- 0x0000007E (0xC000001D, 0xFDE2B30E, 0xFE26E204, 0xFE26DF04). Then it said about disabling bios memory caching and shadowing .....I did this without any luck...........I've never come across any problem of this kind........in my 12 yrs. of formatting and installing OSes.......from the old DOS 3.3 to WinXP...........I must have formatted hard disks and setup OSes atleast 500 times or so.......its not that I'm telling that I know everything........I'm just cant understand why I'm not able to install any single MS OS......am I overlooking something?.....and this system is unique to me.......its running a cyrix pr 333 with some taiwanese board......BTW here are the system specs

Cyrix PR 333
Some taiwanese bios running AMI BIOS
4 GB Hdd
1MB old SIS VGA board
onboard sound
56.6kbps internal model
48x cdrom drive
old keyboard with a ps2 mouse

Looking forward to your replies and advice

Thanks

Some installation problems can actually be down to bad memory....what memory is in the board and how much? I suspect it's Simms? Do you have any lying around you try??

Can you put the hard drive and install win98 on a different system then transfer it back.. it should detect all the different componets and hopefully work... ake sure you pull out as many componets as possible (sound card, modem etc) set it as as a very basic system..

i recently re-installed win98 on an old system (Pentium mmx 200) that would hang an on the first boot up due to a problem with the sis ide drivers that are part of win98. Once i got past that it worked great. 🙂

TheCorm,
The Ram is PC 100 64MB Ram. Dunno if the RAM was faulty coz. my cousin was telling me that the system ran for two years without any problem but of late has been giving problems because of excess junk and too much files.

I'll try out your trick.......I think it will work for sure for some reason 🙂.......but then again I can't make 5 different images for 5 different OSs.......grrr.....looks like I'll have to use my win98se image only.......

but seriously guys........how come that I cant install any operating system? the worst part is that the PC was fully functional before the format..........no bad sectors nothing.........just cant seem to understand

what chipset does the motherboard have?

So the system hangs when the OS starts transfering files from the cd to the hard drive? Could there be a problem with the cd-rom drive? IF you copy the OS cd to the hard drive and install from that, do you get the same problem?

Found some important and crucial details :

Motherboard Manufacturer : TIGA
Chipset : VIA VT82C586B

Sound Card Chipset : Yamaha/HSP 56/ CMI 8738/PCI

Video Card Chipset : SIS 6215

Modem Chipset : Conexant / RS/SP - PCI

CDROM Drive : Creative 48x CDROM drive

Hard Disk : Samsung SV0432D 4.3 GB

Ram : PQI PC100 64MB single module

Cosmic_Horror,
Yeah both ways it hangs near the transferring of files...

hmmmm this is a tough one 😉

When it hangs while transfering files does it tell you what it is doing at the time? (what sort of files it is transfereing or scanning for hardware etc etc?)

I assume you have pulled out things like the modem, sound card (or disabled it).

tried different memory just to see if it is that?

Have you managed to install win98 on a different system (or ghost it) and then put it back in this system?

If you manage to get it installed please post back and let us know how you managed it... 🙂

best of luck. 🙂

Maybe try a new cdrom drive...Creative's are not exactly the best thing in the world. I have seen more Creative cdroms die than any others.

i'd go with thecorm, errors like that on install have almost always been bad memory in my experience. and memory does go bad occationally. do you have any other ram that you could swap out with. or you may get lucky and just reseating it will do it.

good luck

hmm, make sure you're doing a full format instead of a quick.

edit

actually kill all the partitions, then create a new one and full format it, that'll guarantee its not using the old one anymore
