Problem Logging to Windows XP

Couple of months back I built my first computer and it was running fine with Windows XP SP 2. Nothing changed and all of a sudden (probably after a power failure), I am unable to enter into windows.

None of these would let me into windows.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Service Restore Mode
Debugging Mode
Start Windows Normally

Also tried with Windows XP CD but with every attempt it takes me to the following BLUE Screen:


"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed
hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive

Please help me know the understanding of the error message or a way to solve this issue?

To solve this issue, it's probably going to help to know your system's specs, including the details, such as the brand & model of motherboard, which disk controller your HDD is connected to if there are several, what interface type the HDD is (SATA or IDE), etc.



Also, since this isn't a software/apps topic, it looks like Computer Help would be a better location than Windows/PC Software, so it's being transplanted to Computer Help Sorry for any inconvenience due to the thread move, but they want topics to be in the right categories going forward.

Hard Disk Interface is thru SATA

Windows XP prof was installed on Hard Disk1 (80 GB) and is connected to SATA1 (Controlled by JMicron JMB361)
Extra Hard Disk2(500 GB) is connected to SATA3 (Controlled by intel ICH8)

That's great info. I downloaded the manual for the motherboard and tried to see if the JMicron controller has multiple operating modes, but I couldn't find that specifically. What about this idea:

1) if possible, put the HDD into another system temporarily to make a backup copy of your data, then put it back into this one

2) switch it to the ICH8 SATA controller, and then try to do a repair installation of Windows (Method 2 on this page). I believe this motherboard's Intel controllers can operate in AHCI mode, which would require you to supply drivers on a floppy in order to successfully install Windows, so look in the BIOS under Integrated Peripherals > On-Chip ATA Devices and see which mode it's set for. MSI doesn't tell what is in that menu, so I'm going by feel here

Well I am out of luck again. Also I built my machine using mechBgon.com. This site rocks!!

1) I don't have a 2nd desktop and could not back up my data. I am ok with the data loss though.

2) Switched Harddrive1 to ICH8 SATA controller and tried to repair Windows(Method 2 on this page). Well, it showed me welcome screen, read all the peripherals list and just before starting windows, the BLUE screen is back with the same message as in my initial post. The motherboard does not have AHCI mode. The Integrated Peripherals > On-Chip ATA Devices has the following:

IDE HDD Block Mode [Enabled]
PCI IDE BusMaster [Enabled]
IDE Primary Master PIO [Auto]
IDE Primary Slave PIO [Auto]
IDE Primary Master UDMA [Auto]
IDE Primary Slave UDMA [Auto]

Try "IDE" and then try booting Windows again for the heck of it. If it doesn't boot, try a repair install again. A repair install shouldn't lose your data, so the backup suggestion was just in case something gets Seriously Messed Up? during the repair install.

Cool Cool Cool..., my windows is back to business without any data loss. Thanks so much. I can clearly see a little slowness with the system. Is there something I need to revert back the settings to? and lastly what might have exactly happened to the system, Whats wrong with the JMicron JMB361 controller. Is this a mobo issue? TIA

That's good news Next thing to do is install Service Pack 2 if it's not already built into your WinXP CD, you can get the whole installer from here.

Once you have SP2 installed, then reinstall the Intel chipset drivers for your motherboard's chipset. After that, reinstall your video drivers and you should be back in business

My WinXP CD already has SP2. Also since I did a repair, all drivers look intact. I will reinstall in case I need to. But all in all, you bought back cheers. have nice w/e.
