Basically I am trying to figure out what is going on here.
System setup is the same. Just using 2 partitions. 1 with WinME and 1 w/ W2k. The WinMe one runs just fine. But when I run my W2k Pro partition, it runs fine, but I am getting alot of freezes, and they are happening at unpredictable times. SOmetimes I could be running a program or surfing the net, or it can happen when the computer is just sitting there and I come back to the desk to find my mouse and system frozen.

Is there a problem with this setup.... here is the system config below.

MSI K7TPRo2-A bios date 12/06/2000
AMD Duron 700 @ 900
SB Live Gamer
Adaptec 2940UW
IBM 4.5 U2W SCSI Drive
Quantum 30 GB 7200/ata100
Yamaha SCSI CD-RW
Creative Labs Geforce2 GTS drv. 6.48
2 100/10 NIC's
I also have the latest VIA 4-1 drivers (4.28 I believe on both systems)
WinME and W2k have ALL the latest updates (service packs, dx8, drivers, fixes, patches etc)
Both drives are FAT32 a the momment
And there is 256MB of pc-133 ram (Infineon)

Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions on what could be causes the W2k freezes I would appreciate it. It's getting to the point where I may have to connect to it with WinDBG and "TRY" to figure out what is causing it.

Thanks

I am getting spurious freezes as well in W2K and I am starting to suspect the mainboard. 98 is miss behaving for me (problems every other boot with windows protection faults).

I am arriving at wits end (unfortunately, it was a short journey :)

Marqui, how has your system allocated irq's? Check for conflicts. Windows 2K should have come with a system information utility in your system tools folder so you can check. Also, check pc health in BIOS and see what temperature your CPU is running at after an hour or so of computer activity.

Well the temperature is a fine... The case is in the low 30's and the cpu is in the high 30's. I believe that should be fairly common temperatures. But I am a bit worried on the IRQ's. There are no conflicts, but I do have "7" different devices sharing IRQ 11. These in include:

Geforce2 GTS
Creative SBLive
D-Link Net Card
Macronix Net Card
Via USB Universal Host Bus Controller
Via USB Universal Host Bus Controller
Adaptec 2940UW PCI SCSI Card

All show up on 11, but none show up w/ conflicts. Its hard to determine what is causes the freezes, especially since 1. they don't happen in Me, and 2. they happen at random times.

Anyways, if you think the IRQ sharing my be the culprit, how do I go about changing it from auto assignment. I thought someone said it had to do with the APCI or ?

I have finally reinstalled everything W2k and Win98.

Had to assign IRQs but now my system seem rock solid...

thank god!!

Marqui, I have the same trouble with several devices sharing irq 11. Or those same devices all migrating to IRQ 7 if I free that up in BIOS (LPT1 has 7 by default).

I remember reading in this forum that AGP can share IRQ's with PCI no problem. However, I don't know about multiple PCI devices being managed properly using the same interrupt.

I am not sure how to assign all the irq's for the PCI devices. I've been in the pnp/pci part of the bios and tried for the four slots listed there but nothing logical came out of the experiments. Considering that there are six PCI slots and not four that must not be the place to make the assignments.

God I miss jumpers!

Rhialto, how did you manually make the irq assignments for the PCI slots?

Does anyone know how to manually make the assignments for the PCI slots in WIN2K or in BIOS?

Change the IRQ's in windows by going to the device properties and under the resources tab, change the interrupt request. (IRQ)

I have also experienced the same W2K hangs described above. I finally got my Radeon AIW board to be stable the last few nights, but I still get hangs and/or panics whenever I try and record programs.

I would like to get my graphics card off IRQ 11, but I cannot figure out how to do it in W2K.

I am also interested in how Rhialto did this.

Thank You
