Hi, Basicaly I have been having a hard time burning a good CD lately.

This started with my last 50 pack or TDK 48x disks by CMC Magnetics.
My burner is a TDK 40/12/48B (Lite-On) and I usualy never had problems.

I noticed that with the last 20-25 CDs from this set every CD to a while to read and required loots of seeks, but it worked. Isuspected Nero not defragmenting or placing files inproperly on the disk at first and I always used the latest 5.5 version.

Then the CDs started coming out partialy good but at some (random) point on the disk they would become unreadable. So knowing that CMCs are not the best I suspected bad disks and bought a new TDK by Ritek pack.
Shockingly when I burned one of the Riteks I had the same problem with the disk being unreeadable at some point.

So to try one more time I tried my last option or to but to a 12x CD-RW, and this burn completed perfectly without any access delays not bad disk areas.

So is it possible that my burner is having problems burning at 48x for some reason or burning CD-Rs but not RW, or did I get very unlucky and get a CMC and Ritek with bad disks?

Anybody enounter similar problems with burners or CDs?

Many times when you burn at high speeds you create errors,

Try to slow down the speed of your burning... when i burn images i have noticed that when i burn at 52x on either of my burners i would occasionally get some errors... ever sense i slowed down my burner i haven't recieved one error...

That could be the answer... i am kinda new to this forum

In my opinion CMC is crap (known for a long time) and Ritek used to be crap but supposedly is much better in product quality lately.

Additionally, it's been said that burning at ultra high speeds may possibly introduce higher margins for error. Many people have suggested tuning down the burning rate to ensure quality of burn. The difference between 4 and 5 minutes is minimal compared to poor burns.

Differing brand name burners will exhibit varying burning quality characteristics.

I think your problem is a mixture of all three factors IMO.

Turn down the burning speed a touch 'til you find the sweet spot, use "better" media that have better quality tolerances characteristics (like the usual Taiyo Yuden-made FujiFilm cdrs) or maybe switch burners if you find your burner is the culprit.

IMO, media quality and burning speed is usually the problem. It's true that burners will crap out eventually depending on brand quality and amount of abuse as well.

If you use different top quality media with reasonable burn speeds and still have errors then it's time to to point the eye at your hardware.

I don't think that Nero is the problem although it can't be ruled out. The reason is because you state that it burned properly on the 12x cdrw but not on the others. I suspect that 12x rw doesn't tax the your hardware as much as 12x rw does thus enabling higher success on the rw rather than the 48/52x r. Usually software doesn't go "bad" for one action and is "good" for another action in cd mastering software. Usually if something is wrong with your software it's usually totally corrupted and you would have to reinstall.

I'm assuming that you used to burn fine before and now you're having probs?

I tried burning at 32x and I burned 2 disks without any errors. The strange thing is that the burn itself started almost instantly but it usualy takes aas much as 20-30 seconds at 40x so 32x is just as fast or faster then 40x and finishes a 700 MB CD in just over 3 minutes. Is there something strange or is it typical for burns at slower then max speeds to start wuicker?

I'll try some more burns and copies to see if I can narow the issue.

The problem is back and with a vengence!!!!

I burned several disks at 32x without any problems until I tried burning the file from the CD-RW to a CD-R. First I tried a direct disk to disk copy wich resulted in a complete burn but it was very slow accesing some points like before. The source DVD drive could not maintain the data feed of the CD-RW so I copied the file to disk and burned again and once again the disk had problems.

So then I tried burning that file and other files to disk at 32x, 24x, 16x, and 12x and each one had problems but was complete, I tried 40x and that one failed to read completely.

I tried the CD-RW once again and once again the burn was perfect. I tried a CD-R and it was once again bad.

I don't understand what is going on. The CD-Rs all became bad for some reason or is it possible that the burner cannot burn CD-Rs for some reason but has no problem with CD-RW?

So far every disk except for the one at 40X is readable even though it may be slow so it is not completely dead but something has to be wrong here?

I tried running nero CD speed on the disks and they showed erratic behavior on the burner but for some reason in most cases there was a pattern of jumps on the disk. On my DVD drive the graph was much more stable and in some cases showed a perfect read. This may suggest that my burner may be bad even when reading but it still has no problem reading a CD-RW at full speed and as far as I know, older good burns also read fine.

Any of this adding up?
 
I have the same problem, I have an Asus 48/24/52 and it craps out on me after some abuse with burning on 48X with a few hundred discs...
I RMA it and they returned it to me and said that it's normal for 'old' burner to die slowly...
So now I am burning anything with 24x fine but nothing higher...

Think about this way, when you buy a ferrari and ride it at top speed for a few years, the engine will die out eventually...
 
But why is it that the burner cannot perfectly read a CD-R that was written even at 12x but has no problems with the RW and the DVD has less or no problems reading these burned DVD's.
The newer TDK disks have very poor reflectivity. Typicaly with a good disk I can see a good reflection of my face but with these the image is distorted. Is it possible or likely for the burner to be able to burn to one of these disks and yet have problems reading it?

The original problem started only after burning about 20 disks or so. I think they were good but I never actualy verified them. So I guess the once decent TDK disks, even the ritek, are quite bad.
