Hello guys, i need some help here. i've a core2duo 2.13ghz, IL9 Pro mobbo, hitachi 160 GB sata, i can install windowds vista but when i try to install XP i only get to the point where it ask you to press any key to boot from CD, after you get the message "checking your hardware coonfig" then screen goes black and nothing!!! Vista installs without any probs. Any help please as i dont wanna use Vista.

What about Native SATA mode in the BIOS? If it's enabled, and if you aren't loading SATA drivers at the F6 prompt during XP install, it will stop like you are seeing. Vista doesn't have this problem.

ok guys i've been able to solve the problem. i have two sata drives a maxtor and a new hitachi, when the hitachi was set as boot hdd XP just wouldn't go past hardware inspection thing, i even tried integrating the drivers in my XP cd but nothing. So in the bios i changed the hdd boot priority, giving the maxtor priority and voila that did the trick, XP SP2 installed without any problem. Anyway thanks for the input guys.

As a test, I'd suggest disconnecting the other drive temporarily, and making sure Windows will still boot without it connected (in case your bootloader ended up on the old drive).

well ya i'm fearing that too when i can disconnect it gonna try btw i have changed the boot priority again, put the hitachi instead of the maxtor and so far it's working but yes will only know about the bootloader after i disconnect the maxtor. well thanks for all the help guys.
