Problem installing XP on Vista computer

picked out a new computer for my friend. it came with vista. when trying to install xp on it we get a hardware error. is there something wrong with the hardware or has there been this problem before when trying to install xp on a updated vista computer?

Update:

we returned the computer and got a brand new one. the brand new one had the same hardware error.

i thought maybe some of the hardware wasn't supported so i slipstreamed sp3 to the xp cd and tried again. same hardware error.

What is wrong? Can we not install XP?
