Problem installing XP again

It boots, then it says "setup is starting windows" and it stops.


Last time i had a crashing problem, and it was my memory stick. This would now be 2 memory sticks within 6 months. Is it a memory problem again?

I booted it up fine in safe mode, but i cant get it into normal windows.

hold on for a second. are you talking about the actual xp setup? or just the boot up process? it might be memory but try this before blaming the memory.
run a memory test w/floppy and see if your memory is healthy.

i forgot about that program........i ran it and its all find and dandy. So its not the memory.


Well the thing is, i disconnected my slave harddrive when my pc was off. I wanted to see if i could connect it to my other PC to transfer some files. When i put it back in, then the computer didnt work. It wont work even with the slave drive out of the pc.

While in SAFE MODE (and the slave drive disconnected), check
in Device Manager to see if the drive is still listed. If it is, remove it.

Windows XP does not like/support REMOVABLE drives well (unlike Win2k).

Even if it is not listed in the BIOS POST, WinXP overrides the BIOS and assumes
the drive is connected unless removed through ADD/REMOVE Hardware.

I removed the hard drive in safe mode, but it still wont work after i restart. The computer still jams after the XP screen, and the XP setup still jams.

It more than likely is a device driver that it is hanging on.

Did you try using the RECOVERY CONSOLE yet?
(boot with XP CD, choose R, then C. Then Log on with Admin rights)

From the Recover Console goto %SystemRoot%\System32
and type listsrv

The most likely cause woulf be the Network card driver, so look for that service.

Then type disable servicename
