problem installing windows xp

I'm trying to install Windows XP on my AMD 1700+ computer. The problem I'm having is trying to re-install
the XP Windows to my hard drive. I have all the cd's for re-installing. I have the XP Windows Cd that came with the system and I have copies of the XP boot set-up floppies that I created. The problems is when I get to the portion of set-up when installation should occur I get get the following message. It says to put XP cd into D drive which on many occassions it already in the drive. Then it says in order for installation to continue XP has to copy the following file "asrm" to the system. In the drive itself, it shows the following D:\i386. It says I need to type the pathname where I want the file to go but it will not do anything - won't let me type anything in. Its almost like its not recognizing my copy of XP when it gets to this point. The only way I can get out of this configuration is to hit cancel. After hitting cancel, a message comes back stating operation has been cancelled by user. Then the system reboots again. What am I doing wrong? I have followed the direction for partitioning correctly. I thought I maybe able to format the c drive in order to wipe everything off the computer, but I can't get a dos prompt in order to do so. I was able to add the authentication key to installation, but that's as far as I get.:disgust:😕

How can I tell if I have a upgrade XP or a full version XP since the O/S was already installed when I got the computer. If its an upgrade version, that's where my problem can becoming from since I don't have a
O/S on my computer - I'm doing a clean re-install of XP.

Can you simply set the computer to boot from CD-ROM and then do it that way? No floppies.

I tried booting from the XP cd but it still would not work. I get to the point where its trying to install the O/S and I get get the messaage " looking for amrs file in XP. Then it ask me to type in the pathname for it. On the d drive it shows, D:\i386. It will not let me type anything.

Im wondering if you have an OEM proprietary XP install disk, looking for an automated system restore partition on the drive for say a Dell system?

The disk does say it is a OEM - its says its a Windows XP Home Edition OEM Product. It is not for Dell because the system is not a Dell system Its a clone.

I am embarrase to say this but the problem with why it wasn't working was that I had already hooked up the perpherials to the computer and the drive was looking for drivers to them. I had not installed the drivers yet therefore I was getting an error. Thanks everyone for the help. As soon as disconnected the perpherials from the system - did that by mistake, XP loaded ok and I was able to re-install the operating system.😱
