I have been having random restarts, error messages that have shutdown programs like IE, AOL IM, and Winamp and I can't figure it out. I reformatted and reinstalled Windows but it kept having the same problems. Now when I try to reinstall Windows I get messages saying that setup cannot copy several files correctly. Does anyone know what I can do? I have an Abit IS7, P4 2.6C, 1 gb Ram and a Radeon 9800 Pro.

its a hardware problem, Id say mobo or ram
can you get some other ram in there just to see what happens ? also try a different v-card if you can

I have 2 sticks of Corsair 512. I figured that would be enough. Do you think it is the actual ram or the motherboard ram slots?

could be either or could be both, with these things you never know until you try

what you mean"be enough" ? of course 1g is enough, 512 or even 256 would be enough

Is the XP disc scratched? When was the last time you cleaned your CD\DVD drive?

I suggest you download and make a bootable CD with memtest on it. Once you have ruled out the fact that your disc is scratched, of course.

yes memtest is a good idea, but if it shows errors it could be the board as well
+ a floppy works better than a cd for that :)

This happened to my Mom's Dell. It turned out to be the CD drive. She had corrupted a bunch of stuff adding programs with the drive. When I tried to reformat, XP couldn't load. On a whim, I replaced the CD drive and IDE cable and everything cleared up.
