This is a new build pc with an MSI 815e Pro mobo, PIII, 192mb ram.
W2k and Wxp won't install for some reason, but W98 will, even after doing a deep level format of the hdd and error check with Maxtor utility pgm.

W98 is recognizing the PCI modem as a Network communication device.
When boot up it asks for drivers for the above device and when I point to the latest 3Com modem drivers, it says it is not the correct driver for this device. I delete the Network device and try to install a modem (3Com PCI modem), and it gives me options of COM 1, COM 2, or Parallel as ports. Does not allow any other COM option.
If I choose Com1, and proceed installing a generic 3COM modem driver from W98 database, it will install a modem, but no communication can be established. (no signal is established when attempting Dial up).

Is this a bios setting or is the mobo bad?

If that PCI modem card identifies as a Network device not a Communication device, then chances are the card is either broken or doesn't make good contact with the PCI slot.

thank Peter, but I have tried 2 cards and each do the same, in different slots.
I will try another slot to see if it is bad slots.
