Problem installing DVD-ROM drive

I just got an IDE DVD-ROM drive (a Toshiba SD-M1102 to be more specific) and I'm trying to install it on my computer (Win 98, Pentium 2, Abit BH6 MB, 2 Maxtor HDs on Primary IDE, 1 CDRW on Secondary IDE). I first tried setting the DVD drive to slave and installing it on my secondary IDE cable (CDRW set to master), but when I boot up I get the blue screen of death while Windows is loading.
So I take off the CDRW and set the DVD drive to master (putting it alone on the secondary IDE channel). Try to boot and again get the blue screen of death.
After the blue screen the system can't continue to load. I should also add that I'm able to successfully boot Windows in Safe Mode.

The specific error message that comes up in both cases is: "An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:00000017 in VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C1878BF7 in VxD ---."

Any suggestions?

Mail - I have the SDM1202, same mobo, 2 Maxtor HDs, a Celery, and 1 CDRW on the secondary IDE and use 98se also :D I never had that problem with mine. Try not connecting the burner and just using the DVD drive alone. See what happens.

That or did you connect the digital audio cable to your sound card? Try taking it out, just a hunch but probably a long shot.

Just tried a few more things, but still can't get into Windows with the DVD drive connected. So far I've:
-Tried removing the cable connecting the DVD drive to the soundcard.
-Tried removing most of my cards from the MB:
Booting with only the 2 HDs, 1 floppy drive, a 3dfx V3-3000 AGP video card, P2-400MHz Processor, single 128 MB RAM stick, and the Toshiba DVD drive as secondary master (all in my BH6 MB) still gets me the same blue screen!!!
As soon as I remove the DVD drive my system boots fine!
I can't remove my HDs, but if I can find an old PCI video card I used to have laying around I might try putting that in and see if it boots...
Thanks for trying to help!
Any more suggestions, people?

Strange problem. I'm guessing the IDE controller t'aint liking that device for some reason.

Are you just using the standard Win98 bus mastering IDE drivers? You should be.

Do you have DMA boxes checked? Try unchecking them once.

Tried booting my system with a Trident PCI video card instead of the 3dfx one and I'm still getting the blue screen so it's not the video card....This basically leaves the other hard drives, motherboard, RAM, and floppy drive as possibly conflicting devices, which just doesn't make sense to me!
I am using the standard bus mastering driver. In fact, I removed it and restarted Windows in hopes that might make something work, but still get the blue screen every time I try to boot with the DVD drive plugged in.
I'm at a different computer right now so I can't say for sure, but I think the DMA boxes on my other drives are unchecked. I don't have a DMA box for the DVD drive since I can't make it far enough into Windows for it to be added to my device list.
I'm going to try installing it into my girlfriend's computer tomorrow to see if her's accepts it and perhaps check to see if the drive is accessable through DOS drivers. I'll also doublecheck on the DMA thing with my other drives, although I'm guessing your suggestion was to uncheck DMA on the DVD drive.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

I don't know if these guys were having the same problem as you or not. They don't mention that they found a fix but I wonder if the Adaptec aspi layer that is installed with Easy CD Creator is incompatible with your DVD drive? Sorry I don't know the answer. If does have something to do with Easy CD Creator maybe there's an update from Adaptec.

Actually I was suggesting unchecking the DMA boxes on all drives. Just to see what happens. You can always check them again.

Dead Parrot Sketch may be onto something there.
