I have a problem in my home network.

It has two ps's connected by crosswire, 100Mbit LAN.

Both run WinXP sp2, i have even tried disabling all firewalls and Security Software(including windos firewall)

Main Pc connect to web using ADSL usb modem. works fine.

Client PC connected with main pc and network is worikng fine (can share files/printers stuff)

i setup shared internet connection using windows wizard and it completed without problem.

In client pc there is a icon "gateway to internet.." it works, and can connect to internet thru client. it even displays a connection icon in taskbar of client pc when connected.

But the problem is other programs dont identify the connection. in internet explore's connection tab there is nothing to assign as a connection (theres no connection named"gateway to internet.." ), even after connecting to net trhu client.

i even tried opera 9 same result they all displays "no page to display" as it is not connected to net.

I think only thing is to convey other programs to use "gateway to internet.." as a real net connection.

Please help me with this.

Thanks for any of your opinion,.

I think that Windows Firewall has to be On for ICS to work correctly.

As someone who has a ICS network, I can definitely state the sp2 firewall need not be on for ICS to work. But even if you set the sp2 firewall to off, the act of setting up ICS will turn it back on.

But I suspect Buddhika's problem is some missing internet protocal on the client computer. He should have tcp/ip. client for microsoft networks, file and printer sharing for Microsoft networks on both computers. After that use ipconfig /all to make sure the ip address are compatible. Make sure the NIC has proper drivers. If the host is getting internet, there is no
non correctable reason the client should not. And you may have to go the the windows install disk to make sure you have all the network stuff installed.

THANKS for replys,

@ lemon law, can you please explain what you mean by " ip's are compatible " ?
host is 192.168.0.1 and client is 192.168.0.2 (these are correct ICS ip's no?)

but is there anyway to add that "gateway to internet .." connection to IE's connectins list??

(or should it automatically added to the connections list ? @ IE's Tools->Internet options->Connections)

BTW i'm new to ICS, can you please tell me, are there any setting/other thing i should configure, after connecting to net from client ?

THANKS

First, you look to have compatible ip's. Your host computer should have an iP address of 192.168.0.1, the client computer can have an ip address in the form of 192.168.0.x where x is any number between 2 and 254. So you are good there. If you later want to set up a static client address see microsoft knowledge base article KB309642.

Now you say you have a crosswire cable---I assume you mean a crossover cable which should be plugged into the network interface cards on both the host and client computer.
But if something is screwed up, you should be open to the possibility one or more of the NIC's or the crossover cable is defective.

But tabling all that for now, you say you ran the network set up wizard on first the host and then the client computers with the host computer connected to the internet at the time.
You have to make sure the computers have unique name and the network has the same name, and I usually just use the default mshome.

After running the network wizard with the sp2 firewall off, the next step is to again turn the sp2 firewall off on each computer. At that point, you should have network connectivity
automatically on both the host and the client computers.

Assuming you check the box of show icon on the task bar, your host computer should show two internet icons on your task bar. One shows your usb modem connection status. The other should show your ICS connection. On my host computer its just called the the lan connection and the name you gave the host computer. On the client computer one should have just one network icon, in my case just called the local area connection. Your can verify that by placing your mouse cursor over it without clicking.

Now lets try diagnostics. Place mouse cursor over network icon on task bar and right click it. And its should open to a set of menu's. For now lets just try status.
A new window should pop up showing status, duration, and speed. And below that activity
denominated in packets. Now left click the bottom tab of properties. Which will open a new window. Make sure you have a blue check mark for client for microsoft networks, file and printer sharing for microsoft networks, and internet protocal Tcp/ip. And also make sure the tabs for show icon and notify me when connection is limited are checked. And at this point it may not be a bad idea to download and run a winsock fix on each computer to make sure
your tcp/ip stack is not corrupted.

Now go back to the right click step and click repair. On both computers that should go to completion on both, or on only one, or on neither. If it does it on both, I see no reason you should not have internet for the client, if it does it on only one, then you know which computer has a problem, and if it does it on neither you must troubleshoot both.

You should also be able to ping by going start---run---type cmd--enter---and in the open diaglog box you should be able to ping your own IP and the IP of the other. So on the host you can type ping 192.168.0.1 and also ping 192.168.0.2 and get 4 of 4 returns. On the client one should be able to type ping 192.168.0.1 and ping 192.168.0.2. And you can also try things like ping google.com on both computers to see if you are getting out onto the internet.

That should get you up to speed on some troubleshooting steps. If you can't get it working after that, PM me and we will take it from there.

And before we go too far, lets also make sure you don't have any other firewalls on either computer because firewalls must be configured for networking. Once we have network connectivity right, you need to get some firewalls on both your computers.
